Identify the materials required

Task
The task is to create a soundtrack for a moving image product, which is for a doc horror trailer located in the school. The moving image product should include voice-over and music. We have to plan the soundtrack the material by identifying the material required such as music,voice-over, wild tracks, we also had to include source material requires such as scripts, music tracks. To also complete this task required we would have to consider copyright and legal issues. The sound track requires that we had to create was to identify the technology/personnel for the voice over artist and to boo the required technology for the voice-over by booking sheet to show evidence.

Process
Finally we have to produce the recording schedule and put the sound elements together. When making the sound elements we had to consider the reason for the use of the sound such as reinforce emotions, have an effect on the audience, identify the genre etc. In order for me to complete this task i will have to undertake research and make a plan such as my target audience and a time line of sounds that i would like to use and the justification for the use of the sounds. For this task the equipment i will need in order to create this task will be a microphone, computer/ high end mac for recording in the recording room and a iMac mini for the use of garage band/ music software programming (garage band), music elements from wild track and a voice-over. My initial target audience is aimed at 15-19 year old within the school. The reason for this is because the footage and the soundtrack would appeal to teenagers as they tend to watch horror films often. In order to get ideas for the type of footage i wanted to make, i look at several horror trailer films from Blair witch. To identify what type of sound was going to be include to suggest a horror genre i focused on the sounds and the elements and the impact that they was having with the moving image.

USP/ selling point
The unique selling point, (USP) for my trailer is that this has been designed specifically for students in the school, the type of trailer hasn't been done before which makes it a unique selling point. The sound design that has been created has been done from my own individuality which makes it unique with my own scripted voice-over and filmed from a doc style point of view. There is need for this trailer because i think that the sound has an impact and works well the the audio-visual content. The trailer style, i am going to produce will be a horror doc style genre. To identify this genre the visual will be filmed handheld, and the sound and the colour contrast and reflect the genre by the black and white colour and the sounds that will be included will have an impact and suggest a horror sounding trailer. Furthermore the reason for this is because the genre will reflect and is an interest to a teenage demographic. The purpose of this trailer is to appeal to people within the school, this trailer is to attract the audience and make them want to watch, and the use of the sound elements will help attract the audience and have effects on specific audiences which will also identify the genre. My trailer containing my sound elements will be around a minute long to get a taster of the trailer, the trailer will contain a voice-over, dialog/ scripting material and other sound elements.

Aim
For this task i have designed a soundtrack for a Horror Doc trailer, which is aimed towards a demographic of 15-19 year olds. In my soundtrack i have included music elements of a voice-over and sounds from garage band.

Some source material for my sound elements

This podcast identifies some sounds that i have include in my final moving image footage.

The deep heartbeat in my podcast 00:00-00:04 is established throughout my video, which identifies the characters fear and shows there pulse rate which is used at the opening of my video and throughout. The impact in which the heartbeat is doing is explaining the action within the shot e.g. when Tom is running.

This screen shot is the opening scene where the heartbeat sound has been used. I have got this heartbeat sound from free sound http://www.freesound.org/
The eerie strings in the podcast which starts from 00:04- 00:11 has an impact on the audience by grabbing there attention and suggesting something bad is going to happen, this also builds tension to the scene. A heartbeat sound has also been used in the software in iMovie which i have imported in my final cut.

The eerie strings build up as we start to see a silhouette shadow of a mysterious figure, the eerie strings have an impact which builds up to this scene.

The crunching footsteps which is used in the podcast at 00:15- 00:27 secs is used in my final products to identify the characters walking and to show action of running, i created this sound in garage band. The footsteps have an impact in setting the scenery and furthermore shows the pace of the characters running.

The ticking sound which is in my podcast from 00:27- 00:30 is used in my final product is layered with a voice-over and a screech sound, the ticking sound has been used from iMovie to add pace.

The owl sound which has been used in my podcast from 00:31- 00:34 has been used in my final footage to add to the atmosphere as the owl works with the dialog of them, 'i don't want to be here, i want to go home'. The owl sound also adds the ambiounce and creates a isolate atmosphere, however the characters are not alone.

The list of all the all the sound components in my sound/ horror doc trailer are:

  • Heartbeat- a heartbeat sound is used to build tension and connote their life may be in danger furthermore identifying the genre which will have an effect on the specific audience.
  • Suspens...cents 02- is used to create suspense and tension, which identifies the genre and has an impact on the audience.
  • Emotional piano 02- with the low pitch this adds to the tension, furthermore to identify the genre and attract the attention of the audience.
  • Voice-over- this is used to attract the attention of the audience and have an effect of the specific audience.
  • Footsteps- footsteps are used to explain action within the shot of the characters running/ walking.
  • Eerie strings - eerie strings are used to identify the genre, to reinforce emotions and to attract the audiences attention by the unsettling, high pitch sound which build tension and suspense.
  • Owl sound - The owl sound is used to added as a background sound adding to the ambience and connoting a warning sound by the 'hoot' noise.
  • Clock tick - The clock tick sound is used to show that time is ticking and their life may be in danger which is layering and build in with the other sound elements, which has an impact on the audience.
  • Auto Skid- The auto skid sound element is used in the titles when the voice-over comes in, which is used to give coherence between shots, this sound is also used to grab the audiences attention, which enables the voice-over to have an impact on the audience.

Script for Horror Doc Trailer

By creating a timeline of potential sound elements this helped me think of sounds and the impact that it would have on the audience. By splitting this into scenes this helps me to identify the clear structure that i wanted. In my timeline i have included ideogrammatic sound such as a heartbeat, voice-over, eerie strings. These sound elements builds suspension and has an impact on the audience by identify the genre and attraction the audience attention.

The screen shot shows the dialog/ scripting of my voice-over, the part which i underlined identifies the part in which i wanted to have an echoic effect on the voice-over which identified the genre and attracted the audiences attention and also reinforced emotion.

Legal and Ethical issues
In order to create a soundtrack i had to consider the legal and ethical issues. To create my sounds i used some sound elements from free sound http://www.freesound.org/ which enabled me to get sound that wasn't available on the music software that i used such as a heartbeat. To create the soundtrack i produced sounds myself which included the dialog/ voice-over, diogetic sound that was included in the video and other elements that was created in the software garage band.  For the moving image we created the doc style horror trailer in a group so there was no use of copywriting involved in moving image as it was a unique idea. I have considered and i am aware of copywriter issues, by looking into fee sound i have checked the information about this and i am aware that the website allows you to download sound for free.

I have looked into the BBFC and have looked into the certificate ratings, i feel that my footage is suitable for a PG rating as there isn't any violent activity going on in my footage. In my trailer there is no use of violence that children will copy and the language used is suitable for this certificate category. I consider my trailer to be suitable for a PG category rating because there is used of language in  PG rating can contain mild bad language (such as ‘shit’ or ‘son of a bitch’), but the context and delivery are always important. For example, if the language is used aggressively or if there is too much bad language, a work may be passed at the next category. Using the criteria from the BBFC website there is used of mild language which is why i think it will be suitable for this category and not a U.

Required Personnel
For the voice over artist I used Cory as he is a drama student and he is use to performing and portraying different roles, which i though that he would be idilic for the role. The voice-over is used to create a horror style effect and have an impact on the audience. In order to create the voice-over I am going to record the sound in the recording studio in the school which will allow me used sound effects in order to create a more horror convention with an echoic sound in my voice-over, furthermore this will identify the genre and have an impact on the audience, by grabbing there attention. Furthermore i thought that Cory would be good for the role as he has done many acting performances and has an intrests in music and performing as he chose music for GCSE. I thought that Cory would be good for the role because he can express different sounds and accents which would have an impact on the horror genre style and make this effective. Another reason why i thought Cory would be suitable for the role is because he has been in productions/ monologues on Youtube, and school productions such as Grease and other school productions for students, which i thought he would have the skills at performing different roles and versatility which would bring something unique to my advert.

Required Technology

This screen shot shows the software iMovie where i have edited the moving image and the sound together.

This image identifies how i recorded the voice-over using the appropriate technology of a microphone. This equipment allowed me to input sound into the computer software, which further i was able to import on the computer and try different sound effects which i used to add the horror convention of the echoic voice-over.

This picture shows the mac in the music studio which enabled me to edit my voice-over sounds that i recorded. The software that i used to create and edit the voice-over was Logic Pro 9. Logic Pro is a digital audio workstation and also a MIDI sequencer. This software provides loops and instruments synthesisers, audio effects and a dynamic processor with equalising filters and delays. Furthermore with the possible functions this has allowed me to make my voice-over in the way i wanted it to be created.

This image shows the levels of the sounds that can be varied by changing the dials, by changing the levels this allows you to vary the levels of sound, allowing to change the volume and the pitch according to the way i wanted.

Book the required technology/personnel

These screenshots identify the booking times that i have required in order to record my voice-over for my soundtrack.

Inorder to create the voice-over i recorded the voice-over using the recording studio which allowed me to play with the levels and import the dialog into the soundtrack that i created on garage band.

In my film trailer i used the eerie strings to evoke a dark atmosphere and to identify the genre by the high pitch noise which attracts the audience attention by the unsettling mood furthermore this reinforces emotion of fear and danger alerting around the corner.

I used an owl sound to add to the ambience and create an unsettling atmosphere by a ironic effect of owl are out at night suggesting isolation, however in a horror convention the audience suspect something bad is going to happen, furthermore by using a owl sound this is used as a warning sound to highlight the events which is going to happen.

The voice-over has been use to add to the suspense and to grab the audiences attention by the echoic effect, and this sound element is also used to help identify the programme by the tone and the dark whispery echoic sound.

This sound element of emotional piano 02 is the sound element I used from the software garage band
I changed the pitch of this sound to created a more dark tone, which helps identify the specific genre.
Below is the original sound element. By adjusting the pitch to a lower key, this adds to the tension, furthermore to identify the genre and attract the attention of the audience.

This above is the original piano sound element which I adjusting to identify my genre as this sound is too high making it not fit in with my other sound elements.

The heartbeat sound identifies the characters fear and shows there pulse rate which is used at the opening of my video and throughout. The impact in which the heartbeat is doing is explaining the action within the shot e.g. when Tom is running. This sound element I used was from iMovie.

The footsteps sounds are used to show the action with the shot of the characters walking and running, this sound element also has a impact on the audience by the sound which is highlighting the action of the characters running for their lives, furthermore which is adding suspense and tension within the scenes.

This sound element called 'clock tick' is used to show that time is ticking and their life may be in danger which is layering and build in with the other sound elements, which has an impact on the audience.  This sound element was an existing sound on IMovie.

The auto skid sound element is used in the titles when the voice-over comes in, this sound element is used to give coherence between shots, this sound is also used to grab the audiences attention, which enables the voice-over to have an impact on the audience. This sound was used in iMovie.

This sound shows a low flute sound that i used in order to have a different level sound and go underneath layering though out my soundtrack. This sound effect has an eerie effect which impact on the audience. This sound was from free sound.
